A wet start to the Panda Raid 2025

Adventure, simplicity, and perseverance — that’s the essence of the Panda Raid. This annual rally takes hundreds of teams in their Fiat Pandas across the breathtaking landscapes of Morocco. It’s not a race for speed, but an off-road challenge where navigation, team spirit, and the endurance of both man and machine take center stage. Participants battle rough terrain, unpredictable weather conditions, and their own limits, all in a car you’d sooner expect to see in a city square than in the desert. It’s precisely this simplicity that makes the Panda Raid so beloved. It’s not about expensive technology or professional support, but about adventure in its purest form.

This year, participants will cover an impressive 1,954 kilometers, of which 924 kilometers are off-road. These demanding distances are spread over six stages, with the landscape changing daily: from dusty plains to mountain passes, and from desert sands to gravel tracks. A remarkable 416 teams are at the starting line, mainly enthusiastic Spaniards and Italians, but also adventurers from other corners of Europe. Everyone in the Panda Raid is a true enthusiast, drawn by the charm of these small, indestructible Pandas.

The Panda Raid has officially begun, though not as the participants had hoped. What is usually a sunny start to this adventurous rally through the desert landscapes of Morocco, began this year with rain pouring from the skies. The first stage was plagued by heavy rainfall, forcing the organizers to cancel the day’s opening special stage.

Still, the wet start didn’t dampen spirits, especially not for the teams of Tachyon Motorsport. From this team, two special duos are on the starting grid. First, Maarten Buitenhuis, who is experiencing an unforgettable adventure alongside his daughter Fleur. For them, the Panda Raid is not just a rally, but a unique opportunity to conquer the rugged Moroccan landscape together, relying solely on the simplicity and character of their little Fiat Panda.

Beside them in the field is Remy van Pommeren, also driving for Tachyon Motorsport, with Marie Tourneur by his side. Marie is no stranger to the rally world: as the daughter of Vincent Tourneur, the well-known Porsche gentleman driver with rally experience in events such as the Classic Dakar, rallying clearly runs in her veins.

Despite the false start caused by the wet weather and the canceled first stage, participants remain optimistic. The Panda Raid is renowned for its charm, camaraderie, and the power of simplicity. It’s not a race against the clock, but rather a battle against the elements, the terrain, and oneself. The rain may have brought mudflows and slippery passages, but it also marked the beginning of a story that will be proudly told back home.

Maarten Buitenhuis shared with us: “Beautiful route so far, tomorrow into the mountains. But the rain could stop now.” His optimism is a perfect reflection of the atmosphere in the bivouac: wet, yet positive and full of anticipation for what lies ahead.

The forecast promises clearer skies in the coming days, and then the real adventure can begin. The route is ready, the desert is calling, and the Pandas are eager to prove themselves.
