False Start and Mechanical Setbacks: DaklaPack Rallysport Shows Resilience in Dakar Rally

The Dakar Rally, known as one of the toughest motorsport events in the world, has proven no different for Dave and Tessa Klaassen of DaklaPack Rallysport. Despite entering the race better prepared than ever, with a professionalized team and experienced crew, their adventure faced unexpected challenges early on.

Professionalism and a Strong Team

Dave and Tessa began this year’s Dakar with a revamped team led by team manager Bob, a Belgian with 25 years of motorsport experience. This year, they are fielding two cars: their own Red-Lined REVO T1+ and a Taurus T3 MAX for an Argentinian client. Preparation was meticulous, with a clear team structure and a well-stocked supply of spare parts. “From a technical standpoint, the team is running like a well-oiled machine,” said Dave.

However, the adventure got off to a rocky start. Even before the rally began, several team members, including Tessa, fell ill. “It started before we even boarded the plane, with someone throwing up everywhere,” Dave recalled. “Then, the day before the prologue, Tessa got very sick, and our mechanics started dropping out one by one.” Despite these setbacks, the team managed to begin the rally on a strong note.

Mechanical Trouble and a Tough Stage

The first few days went well, but disaster struck during the third stage. While initially thinking they had a flat tire, Dave and Tessa discovered a broken suspension arm, which caused severe damage and required immediate repairs in the middle of nowhere. Fast assistance arrived from Boucou, followed by another service truck. “With eight people, we tried to fix the problem, but then the generator for the welding equipment failed. We made a temporary repair, but it gave out after just two kilometers,” Dave explained. Ultimately, they had to abandon the stage, a heavy blow to the team.

Despite this disappointment, the team resumed the rally with a refreshed car. Dave and Tessa remain focused not only on the Dakar Rally but also on the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC), where points can be earned daily. This keeps them motivated to push forward. “We drive as fast as possible without taking risks,” Dave shared. “The marathon stages bring back the true Dakar spirit, where you connect with other competitors.”

The Essence of the Dakar Rally

For Dave and Tessa, the Dakar is unique for its mental and physical demands. “The last 100 kilometers of a stage are pure grit,” Dave said. “Dakar is about breaking your car and testing your mental limits. Once you understand that, you start to love it.” While the rally lacks the scenic beauty of events in South Africa or Portugal, it offers an unparalleled challenge.

Looking ahead to the second week, the team is optimistic. After thorough maintenance during the rest day, both cars are back in top condition. “We’re eating well, sleeping well, and feeling fresh,” Dave said. With the goal of completing the second week as cleanly as possible, the team remains highly motivated.

For DaklaPack Rallysport, the Dakar Rally is more than just a race. It is the ultimate test of endurance, teamwork, and passion for the sport.
