With the Dakar Rally still fresh in memory, the HT Rally Raid team is already gearing up for its next big challenge: the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge (ADDC). Team manager Ties Hellegers shares insights into the preparations, logistical challenges, and unique aspects of this rally.
Four riders at the start
HT Rally Raid will compete in the ADDC with four riders this year. “We usually facilitate up to five riders, but unfortunately, one had to drop out at the last moment,” says Ties. Despite this setback, the team is determined to deliver a strong performance.

Smart logistics after the Dakar Rally
The short period between the Dakar Rally and the ADDC presents a logistical challenge. HT Rally Raid leverages the facilities and vehicles of SRG Motorsport, allowing the team to avoid preparing all their own materials for immediate transport to the United Arab Emirates. “Two bikes were sent directly from Dakar, but our parts and tools were flown in from Amsterdam after Dakar,” Ties explains.

Tight schedule from Barcelona to Dubai
Transporting the vehicles and materials was a tight but efficient process. “On Monday, everything was picked up in Barcelona, and by Wednesday, it was already on its way to Dubai,” says Ties with a smile. “It’s a challenge, but we love that.”
A unique rally with an ocean of sand
What makes the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge so special? “It is the only rally on the calendar that consists almost entirely of sand and dunes,” Ties explains. This attracts riders who want to enjoy dune riding without the risk of treacherous rocks, like in Dakar or the Rallye du Maroc. “The route is only 20 kilometers away from the Empty Quarter stages in Saudi Arabia, making it an ideal training ground for Dakar.”
Additionally, the location offers extra safety. “There are three helicopters available that can take you directly to specialized hospitals. In countries like Morocco, medical facilities are less advanced. You might end up in a hospital where chickens are still roaming around downstairs,” Ties jokes.
The team behind the riders
HT Rally Raid travels to the ADDC with a compact but well-organized team. “I am here as the team manager, along with two of our own mechanics. We also work closely with three mechanics from SRG Motorsport. We complement each other well and are always ready to help one another when needed,” says Ties.

The biggest challenge: Controlling speed
One of the biggest challenges during the ADDC is keeping the riders’ speed in check. “Especially the guys with a motocross background tend to ride too fast and can miss blind drop-offs or dangerous patches of camel grass. The terrain is a paradise for motorcyclists, but it can also be life-threatening,” warns Ties.
With a strong team spirit and well-thought-out preparation, HT Rally Raid is ready to take on the battle in the sands of Abu Dhabi.
