Ian Olthof ready for Dakar after successful Rallye du Maroc

With a strong finish in the Rallye du Maroc, Ian Olthof has completed his final major test on the road to his debut in the Dakar Rally. The 26-year-old motorcycle rider from Hellendoorn successfully completed the tough Moroccan rally last week, proving not only his physical readiness but, more importantly, his mental resilience. After his crash in an earlier rally in Morocco back in March, this was his first time back in the dunes, where he found both his rhythm and confidence once again.

The Rallye du Maroc is considered the ultimate dress rehearsal for Dakar, featuring long days, complex navigation, and brutal dunes. Olthof remained consistent and determined throughout the week and ended the rally with a deep sense of satisfaction. “This was an important test for me. Back in the sand, back in the rhythm, and it felt good. I’m ready,” said Ian.

Chasing a childhood dream

Successfully completing this rally means that Ian will officially line up at the start of the Dakar Rally 2026 on January 3, the toughest rally in the world. With the support of HT Rally Raid, the adventure he has dreamed of since childhood will finally begin. For two weeks, he will battle sand, time, and himself as a motorcycle rider, chasing the finish line of an epic journey.

‘Tall tales afternoon’ in Hellendoorn

To celebrate the road to Dakar together with fans and supporters, Ian’s family and friends, affectionately known as “the cross cousins”, are organizing a special Dakar-themed afternoon on Saturday, November 9 at Restaurant In de Tonne in Hellendoorn. From 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, everyone is welcome to soak up the true Dakar atmosphere.

Visitors can get up close to Ian’s rally bike, explore the HT Rally Raid team truck, and admire the massive rally truck of Gert Huzink’s team. There will be activities for children, and the focus of the day will be on the stories: at 4:00 PM, the main program kicks off with speakers who have all earned their stripes in Dakar.

Among them: Joop Staman (participant in 1982), Mirjam Pol (ten-time Dakar competitor), and Ian Olthof himself, each sharing their experiences, lessons, and dreams. From desert navigation to refueling strategies, and from grueling days to magical moments along the way.

Free entry, enthusiasm required

Entrance to the event is free, but voluntary donations are appreciated. Registration is available via this online form. The afternoon promises to be a celebration for motorcycle fans, rally enthusiasts, and anyone curious about bivouac life and the passion behind Dakar.

Starting in January, Ian’s Dakar journey can be followed daily on social media and TV broadcasts. But first: Hellendoorn is gearing up for an unforgettable kickoff to his Dakar adventure.
