Mathieu Baumel Returns to the Dakar Rally: “My mind is ready – the rest will follow”

After four Dakar victories and countless achievements in rally raid, Mathieu Baumel now faces what may be the most significant challenge of his career. In January, the experienced navigator will make his comeback in the world’s toughest rally but under entirely new circumstances. Following a serious accident earlier this year that resulted in the loss of his lower right leg, everything has changed. From equipment to routines and cockpit collaboration, every detail had to be rethought and adapted.

A comeback like no other

Baumel will once again join forces with Belgian driver Guillaume de Mévius in the MINI JCW Rally 3.0i, a proven duo on the rally scene. But this time, the road to Dakar required a different kind of preparation. Physically and mentally, the rally is already demanding even more so now that Baumel must navigate with a prosthesis in extreme conditions where every second counts.

One of my biggest concerns is the distance,” he admits. “We’ve done some testing and completed a three-day Baja, but fifteen days of non-stop racing is something else entirely.

Relearning everything

Baumel has worked tirelessly to adapt to his new situation. Simple actions such as getting out of the car or changing a wheel now require more time and effort. Deep sand and uneven terrain only increase the difficulty.

To make these situations more manageable, Baumel has opted not to wear a full prosthesis during the rally. Instead, he uses a short support that allows him to move on his knees more quickly in emergencies. A longer prosthetic leg with a quick-change system is stored in the vehicle for use if needed.

Custom gear for extreme rallying

To endure long hours in the cockpit, a tailor-made seat has been developed to stabilize and support the upper part of the prosthesis. His racing suit was also specially modified. Sparco approved several adjustments that allow for quicker prosthesis changes, something previously not possible under regular homologation standards.

The car also features a custom-designed holder that secures the prosthesis safely within arm’s reach.

Pushing physical and mental limits

Baumel’s preparation includes daily sessions with physiotherapists and coaches. He focuses on rebuilding strength, losing weight, and maintaining mental sharpness. “My left leg still isn’t fully load-bearing, but I’m improving every day,” he says. “My mind is ready – the rest will follow.

The support from long-standing partners such as CP, Faster, Reiger, and SADEV has been crucial. Their expertise and commitment have helped make this remarkable comeback possible. The team is deeply grateful for their trust, which has played a vital role in Baumel’s return to elite rallying.

Final test before Dakar 2026

Before taking on the main challenge in Saudi Arabia, Baumel and De Mévius completed a final endurance test at the Jeddah Baja. It was their last opportunity to race under real conditions, fine-tune procedures, and further strengthen their teamwork.

With a fully customized setup, relentless training, and an unwavering mindset, Mathieu Baumel is ready for Dakar 2026. His story is one of resilience, innovation, determination, already shaping up to be one of the most inspiring narratives heading into this year’s rally.
