The 2026 Dakar Rally kicks off with a compact but demanding prologue around Yanbu. Though short on paper, this opening stage requires full concentration from the very first meter, as even small mistakes can immediately impact the starting order for the first long stage.
After the completion of the administrative and technical scrutineering, a total of 317 vehicles have been approved to take part in the 48th edition of the Dakar Rally. As a result, 564 competitors, drivers, and navigators from 49 different countries will line up for the prologue. The entry list includes 115 motorbikes, comprising 15 RallyGP and 100 Rally2 entries with 26 participants in the Original by Motul category, alongside 72 cars in the Ultimate class, 7 Stock cars, 37 Challengers, 41 SSVs, and 45 trucks. France once again tops the nationality rankings with 188 competitors, followed by Spain with 106 and Italy with 68.
The prologue starts and finishes in Yanbu and covers nearly 22 kilometers, preceded by a 41-kilometer liaison and followed by another 33-kilometer liaison. Despite its relatively short length, the organization has clearly marked the stage as both technical and selective.

Technical and varied terrain
The stage features a constantly changing rhythm. Competitors will face fast sections interspersed with more technical stretches. The route leads through narrow and sometimes winding canyons, with surfaces ranging from hard and fast to rocky and treacherous. Several areas include ‘trial sections’ where precision is more important than speed. This makes the prologue a challenging task for bikes, cars, and trucks alike, with little room for error.
Start times and daily schedule
The first competitors will leave the Yanbu bivouac in the morning. The bikes and quads are scheduled to begin at 08:20. Cars and trucks will follow later in the morning, starting from 10:50. The first bike enters the timed section at 09:15, with the first car scheduled at 11:45. After the prologue, a ceremonial podium event follows before the participants return to the bivouac.

Key points and safety notes
The organization has highlighted several specific caution areas. Around kilometer 9.75, a hazardous trial section demands extra care. At kilometer 17.12, it is crucial to follow the indicated course precisely. For trucks, a mandatory detour to the right is required around kilometer 20.07 to avoid dangerous obstacles.
While the prologue is unlikely to create large time gaps, it will serve as the first real sorting of the field. The result determines the starting order for the first full stage and can therefore have a significant impact on how the rest of Dakar Rally 2026 unfolds. A strong and mistake-free opening is essential for anyone with serious ambitions in the general classification.
