The Africa Eco Race 2026 is off to a turbulent start. The traditional prologue on the beach in Tangier has been cancelled due to persistent severe weather conditions in the region. Storm Harry has gripped the city for over a week, culminating in an extremely violent night just before the scheduled arrival day.
This morning, the organization was faced with significant damage to key installations in the scrutineering area. Despite intensive efforts by both the City of Tangier and the race organization to repair damage and rebuild the infrastructure, the situation remains difficult. To make matters worse, the cargo ship transporting essential materials for scrutineering arrived much later than planned. Originally expected at 7:00 a.m., docking was delayed until at least 10:00 a.m., causing further setbacks in setup. The weather forecast for Sunday remains concerning, with continued rain and strong winds expected.
Given all these factors, the organization has decided to cancel the prologue. Instead, the time will be used to properly set up the scrutineering area to ensure the rally can begin under the right conditions. Technical and administrative checks will proceed over the weekend according to a revised schedule, which will be announced shortly.
The organization emphasizes that this decision was made in the interest of safety and the success of the event. A solid and well-prepared start is essential for a successful rally. All teams remain on standby, working closely with the city of Tangier, to ensure a safe and professional launch of the Africa Eco Race 2026.
