Prologue and now also first stage of Africa Eco Race cancelled

The 2026 Africa Eco Race has had an unusual start. After the earlier cancellation of the prologue on the beach in Tangier, the first stage has now also been scrapped. The cause lies in the extreme weather conditions currently gripping northern Morocco. Storm Harry continues to bring strong winds, rain, and snow, especially in the Atlas Mountains where snow depths have now exceeded one meter in some areas.

Logistical challenges are piling up. The access road to the next bivouac is currently impassable. Local authorities are not expected to begin clearing the route until Sunday, January 25, forcing the organization to explore alternative plans. One scenario involves following the already planned service route to the bivouac, provided it is passable. Other options are also being assessed. While rally raid is about conquering the elements, safety and logistics are now the top priorities. The first stage, which just a week ago was considered muddy but manageable, is no longer safe under current conditions. The organization stresses that this was a difficult but necessary decision.

Technical and administrative checks have also been delayed due to the severe weather. Despite this, most participants have now completed the mandatory scrutineering process, with the remaining competitors expected to finish on Sunday. As a result, the parc fermé will not become mandatory until Sunday evening at 19:00, giving teams extra time to prepare their vehicles.

There is, however, a glimmer of positive news from Tangier. A ceremonial start is planned for Sunday, featuring a short drive through the city to keep the rally spirit alive. For competitors who have been left in limbo, this offers a moment to officially kick off their adventure.

Further information about the revised route to the first bivouac and a possible restart of the rally is expected during the next official briefing on Sunday evening. Until then, it remains uncertain how the situation will unfold. One thing is clear: this edition of the Africa Eco Race is off to a wilder start than ever before.
