The build-up to the Africa Eco Race started just across the French border in Italy, where participants gathered at various locations for technical and administrative checks. Once cleared, the rally “circus” made a brief detour to Monaco.
Amid the backdrop of opulent wealth, the participants and their rally vehicles were officially presented—a grand introduction to the real event. The rally itself officially kicks off on New Year’s Eve in Morocco, with participants tackling a short stage and a long liaison, offering their first taste of the rally action in this edition.
For those with even a basic grasp of geography, it’s common knowledge that no bridge or tunnel connects Europe to Africa. Driving to Morocco always involves boarding a ferry, and this time, the convoy set off from Marseille. After receiving enthusiastic cheers from the crowd in Monaco as they rolled over the podium, participants hit the public roads to Marseille, where the ferry awaited.
While the ferry was patient, customs officials were less so. Most vehicles could only be loaded onto the ferry the following morning. Though not insurmountable, this process exemplified the signature charm of the Africa Eco Race—a family-like atmosphere paired with a distinctively French laissez-faire approach. In less refined terms: chaotic and at times baffling, but somehow, everything works out in the end. Perhaps it’s all part of the race’s unique allure.
The ferry ride itself is a mini-adventure, taking nearly two days at sea—a true journey in every sense. Or, in maritime lingo: TOOOOOOT TOOOOT!
Once participants finally set foot on African soil, the long prelude will give way to uncontainable excitement. What follows is two weeks of intense competition, culminating at the iconic Lac Rose near Dakar. Not everyone will make it through this grueling endurance test, but for those who cross the finish line, it will be a victory worth celebrating. They’ll leave knowing they’ve conquered the race—and its quintessentially French charm.
